2023 New Year's Resolutions

Happy New Year's!

Peak Music Academy Resolutions for 2023

  • Create a practice routine and commit to your routine - A good practice includes Technique, Reading and Repertoire. Be sure to practice everything on your list. Choose a time that will be available to you every day. Getting up just 15-30 minutes earlier in the morning could be just what you need! You could also link it to another activity, like eating or brushing your teeth, getting home from school, waking up in the morning, etc. Students could also be asked to practice before having screen time, playing with friends or having other activities. Parents can help by enforcing rules, walking the student to the instrument and giving positive feedback for effort.
  • Pick challenge pieces Work with your teacher to pick pieces from all different musical periods that are challenging for you and that you are motivated to spend time with. Just because you have a fun piece doesn't mean you should ignore technique and sight reading though. Be sure to continue working on the foundational techniques that will make you an excellent musician!
  • Complete Academy challenges Completing Theory and Technique Challenges are fun! They can help you to become a better musician and you can earn amazing prizes as well. Theory challenges include Note Reading, Chord Identification, Ear Training, Scale Notation, Key Signature Identification, Terms and Symbols, History and other important musical elements.
  • Perform at least once a month - There are so many performance opportunities at Peak Music Academy. Be sure to sign up for every Performance Class available. In preparation for Recitals, Festivals and Competitions, practice performing in front of family and friends on different pianos in different locations to be prepared for your performance. Always practice your review songs so they are prepared for any time you are asked to play.
  • Listen to more music - Listen to the music suggested for the composer of the month. Listen to a variety of composers and genres to gain a broader scope of repertoire available.

Whatever New Year's Resolutions you choose for this year, I hope they will include some musical resolutions so that the end of 2023, your Peak Music Academy Progress Report will include many new additions to your repertoire and musical knowledge.

I am thrilled to announce the addition of our newest teacher Marnie Lucas! Marnie has been playing the piano since a young girl and will be helping at Peak Music Academy with our Piano Lab. She will be facilitating a Piano Lab where students can come once a week for up to an hour to learn how to use all of the software and applications available in the studio, enhancing their understanding of theory, music history and appreciation, sight reading, note reading, composition, improvisation, practice with rhythm and other piano-related materials. Anyone is welcome to register for this course whether you are a member of Peak Music Academy yet or not. I happily accept students from other studios as well as those who just want an introduction to piano through some fun learning experiences. This lab does not replace the fabulous personal instruction of a private or group setting from a qualified teacher. Students will enjoy learning with an engaging instructor who will guide them in using many software and technology application options available to learn music.

Students who do not currently have a teacher will be required to purchase a subscription to Piano Marvel ($110/year). There is a current sale where you can get 2 students from the same family a membership for $180/year. I recommend all students have this subscription but it is only required for new students.

There will be 31 labs available in the school year and 6 in the summer. At only $30/month, this is a real bargain. If you are interested in participating, please register here.

I love having adventures with my sweetheart of nearly 30 years! My musical journey has been an adventure and continues to inspire me as much as climbing mountains! Proud mother of 6 children who all play the piano and grandmother to two amazing grandchildren who will certainly play the piano some day!
